Cleaning Advice for Regular Folks

By: Enriq Roalette

Based on television commercials, you would think cleaning is like going to war. It need not be. You don’t need every cleaning supply in the world. Just follow this advice.

1. Cleaning Shower Curtains - Your best weapon against soap scum is white vinegar. Cleaning shower curtains can be accomplished by throwing them into the clothes washer. Use a quarter to a half cup of white vinegar instead of detergent.

2. Cleaning Shower Heads - Cleaning shower heads is a necessary task and fairly easy. Take the shower head off. Place it in a bowl with equal mixes of hot water and white vinegar. Leave it for an hour or so and then rinse it thoroughly.

3. Putting the Shine in Glass Covered Paintings - These days, many people protect paintings or pictures with a glass cover. First and foremost, do not use water to clean the glass.

4. Candle Wax in Carpet – If you get candle wax in your carpet, grab the iron and a brown bag. Place the bag over the wax and apply the iron. The wax will melt into the bag.

5. Clean Muddy Carpets – Unless you are a hermit, muddy carpets are a fact of life. To get it out, wet the mud, sprinkle salt on it and then vacuum about an hour later.

6. Stop Flies Inside – To get rid of flies, hang cloves in your rooms. Flies hate them much like vampires hate garlic. Yes, it really works. No promises on the vampires!

7. Fireplace Cleaning Products – Do not use regular cleaning products on fireplaces. The chemical residue the leave is often toxic, which will make your next fire a bad one. Use water like your ancestors!

8. Dirt on Ceilings – Despite the best efforts of gravity, dirt and dust will get on your ceilings. Put on some goggles and wipe the ceiling with a mop. Definitely wear your cleaning clothes for this one.

9. Garbage Disposal Smell – Does your garbage disposal smell to high heaven? Cut up some lemons and throw them in with the rinds still on. Run water and turn the disposal on. Always does the trick unless something has died.

10. Bleach Safety – Bleach is the best choice for cleaning mildew. That being said, it is nasty stuff. Make sure to wear rubber gloves or it will remove the hair from your hands and arms where it touches them.

You spend more time in your home than anywhere else. Cleaning it top to bottom every so once in a while makes absolute sense. After all, who wants to live in a dump?
